In my experience, if an activity isn’t repeated intentionally, it will never develop
into a habit. If an activity is not a habit, it will be a quick fad, and I will never
experience its benefits. So, let’s discuss a couple more healthy habits that will
benefit your brain health and lead to a healthier, happier you.
A general truth to remember is that something bad for your heart is also bad
for your brain. Obesity, for instance, can lead to Coronary Artery Disease or, even
heart failure. However, obesity can also impact the brain by reducing blood flow.
Our brain is fed by the oxygen in our blood. Less blood means less oxygen, which,
in turn, leads to cognitive decline. High blood pressure can damage the arteries
leading to your heart, leaving you susceptible to heart disease. Likewise, high
blood pressure can cause blood clots to develop and block the blood going to
your brain, leading you to a stroke. Diabetes can damage the vessels and nerves
in your heart. It can also cause your brain to age faster than expected and
increase your risk of dementia by 50%.
Another healthy habit is to take care of your ‘brain box’ (that would be your
head, in case you were wondering). A bump on the noggin’ can cause serious
brain complications. You can safeguard yourself by always wearing a seatbelt
when you are in a car. A collision is never good but without a seatbelt your
chances of a concussion, or worse, are exponentially increased. If you ride a bike
to get exercise, pop on your helmet. If you play sports where a conk on the head
is possible, wear protective gear. Traumatic Brain Injury can happen simply from
falling down and hitting your head, so be careful and protect your ‘brain box.’
Next month, we will explore some more healthy habits to keep your thinker
thinking and your brain braining. (I know that was a bit of a reach…but it felt right)
